About Green Built Alliance

We are an nonprofit organization of people who care deeply about where we live: our homes, our neighborhoods and our planet. Founded in 2001 as the WNC Green Building Council by a group of building professionals who craft buildings that are healthier for the environment and families, have lower utility costs, are more durable, and bring a higher selling price, Green Built Alliance continues to serve our region today with sustainability programs, education and advocacy.

About Appalachian Offsets

Initially launched by the WNCGBC in 2005, Appalachian Offsets completed four energy-efficiency retrofits for local nonprofits over the next two years. The most successful project happened in late 2007, when UNC Asheville students volunteered with the Asheville Housing Authority (AHA) to switch out 13,000 inefficient incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lightbulbs. This retrofit saved the AHA and its residents more than $250,000 per year and collectively reduced carbon emissions by more than 3,790 tons annually.

Interest in the program waned with the onset of the 2008 recession, as building projects were delayed or cancelled and businesses lacked the resources to offset their emissions. However, today, environmental stewardship and the economy are once again growing in Western North Carolina, and Appalachian Offsets resumed in August 2016 based on community demand.

We are delighted to offer this program once again and encourage you to offset your carbon footprint today and help support a local organization in need.
